The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions will please come to order. For the awareness of the members, Senator Paul is two minutes out so we can go through a lot of this and he'll come in and vote will be out. And for the awareness of members, your presence here will be considered as being present at Gavel Down for the hearing itself. We reconvene to consider our vote on Scott Mayer to be a member of the National Labor Relations Board and Mary Ann Carter to be Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. I defer to Senator Sanders for an opening statement.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I'll be voting against both of these nominees. First, as I think we all remember, several months ago President Trump illegally fired NLRB member Gwynne Wilcox. In doing so, Trump effectively neutered the only federal agency responsible for holding corporations accountable for union busting and protecting the constitutional rights of workers to form unions. Before Ms. Wilcox is reinstated to the NLRB, I believe it would be inappropriate for us to be voting on any new members to this board. Secondly, all over this country, workers are standing up trying to form unions. They are looking at an economy in which the people on top are doing phenomenally well and they are struggling to put food on the table, pay their healthcare, pay their rent. I was just on a picket line a few days ago with workers at Starbucks. They have been trying to form a union for the last four years against incredible illegal union busting activities. We need an LRB in this country that does what it was designed to do to stand up for workers who are being treated unfairly by the companies they work for. So I would urge a no vote on that nominee.
