Before recessing, the committee had postponed further consideration of the committee print for... We will now continue consideration of those amendments before the committee. And I know that before we adjourned, Congressman David Scott had an amendment at the desk, number 18. and members will suspend while the amendment is being distributed okay Oh, and his distribution crew. They were ready to go.
Amendment number 18 offered by Mr. David Scott of Georgia. Without objection, the amendment will be considered as read. I now recognize this distinguished gentleman from Georgia, Mr. Scott, to sponsor the amendment for up to five minutes for an explanation of their amendment. Thank you very much, Chairman. I am very troubled in mind I listened to my friend Mr. Dusty Johnson of South Dakota yesterday. He's a fine gentleman, but this is the message that this amendment is going to deal with.
Folks, it is an insult to the intelligence of the American people for us to sit here and think that you're going to take $300 billion from this program and it's not gonna hurt the American people. And I listened to Mr. Johnson yesterday, and he's a decent person, but the American people must rise up and help us. This is a bad omen for this nation to take $300 billion out of the most valuable program to serve the most basic need of the American people. Ladies and gentlemen, we can do without a lot of things, but the one thing we cannot do without is food. And you mean to tell me that we're sitting here in Congress and trying to convince ourselves and the American people that you can cut $300 billion out of our basic food security program and nothing happens? It's proved. So I want to appeal to the American people.
